Missouri couple shares experience of surviving tornado

Joplin, Missouri
(June 3) An EF-5 tornado swept through Joplin, Missouri, May 22, hammering a hospital, destroying thousands of homes and buildings, killing at least 134 people, and injuring 750 more.

Nazarene Compassionate Ministries is part of the relief effort in southwest Missouri. More than 1,000 Nazarenes have volunteered their time and energy through NCM in this city left in ruins by the tornado.

NCM and Global Communications had the opportunity to speak with many of the survivors, including Julie and Josh Cook.

Julie Cook survived the storm in the electronics section of a Walmart.

The Cooks, members of Joplin Calvary Church of the Nazarene, shared their experience with NCM. They express their gratitude to the Church of the Nazarene for the outpouring of love for Joplin, and also express their desire to help their neighbors and friends who suffered far worse tragedies.

Join NCM in continued prayer for the healing of the community, and continue to join us in supporting the relief efforts at www.ncm.org/usatornadoes.

Massive Famine in the Horn of Africa

On July 20th, the UN officially declared a famine in the Horn of Africa for the first time since almost a million people in Ethiopia starved to death in 1984.

This follows the worst drought in the area in 60+ years and is affecting more than 12 million people.

Nazarene Compassionate Ministries teams are already in the region assessing needs and coordinating relief efforts.
